A major £400,000 refurbishment of the Verulamium Spa at Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre has been announced, with work set to begin on 19 January 2026.
Everyone Active, which manages the centre in partnership with St Albans City & District Council, is investing in a full modernisation of the spa to create a refreshed environment for relaxation and wellbeing.
A major focus of the upcoming refurbishment is the renewal of the spa’s heat and water experience - the suite of thermal and water-based facilities that includes the steam room, sauna, hydrospa and monsoon showers. These areas will be revitalised with new tiling and lighting, a full refit of the sauna, an enhanced monsoon shower experience and a re-tiled hydrospa. New features such as an ice cave with cold plunge baths, a salt room, infrared seating and upgraded heated loungers will further enhance the wellbeing offering.
The men’s and women’s spa changing rooms will also undergo a full refurbishment, with new lockers, showers and vanity areas, and all five treatment rooms will be refreshed. The spa will relaunch in early March 2026 with a new cosmetic brand and an expanded treatment menu.
While the spa will remain open for much of the refurbishment period, temporary closures will be required as specific areas are upgraded. Customers will be notified in advance of any changes to access.
This spa investment follows a wider programme of improvements carried out across Westminster Lodge earlier this year. Over the summer, the main pool showers and bistro toilets received full refurbishments, with upgraded fixtures and refreshed décor.
More recently, the men’s and women’s gym changing rooms have received a full upgrade, featuring new shower cubicles, updated tiling, improved lighting and refreshed vanity and toilet areas. This work is due to complete on Tuesday 23 December.
Steve Cox, Area Contract Manager at Everyone Active, said: “The Verulamium Spa has been much loved for the 13 years since it first opened, welcoming thousands of visitors and becoming a key part of what makes Westminster Lodge such a popular destination. This investment ensures those facilities continue to meet the high expectations of our customers, providing a premium and modern spa experience.
“Combined with the improvements made across the wider centre earlier this year, it reflects our ongoing commitment to offering the very best leisure and wellbeing facilities for the St Albans community. We look forward to unveiling the revitalised spa next March.”
Councillor Helen Campbell, Lead for Leisure, said: “This is a major investment which will greatly enhance a very popular facility at Westminster Lodge. I am sure the centre’s users will be delighted when the improvements are unveiled early next year.
“As a Council, one of our priorities along with our partners at Everyone Active is to maintain first class leisure centres for our residents. The spa upgrade will be a fantastic demonstration of that cast iron commitment.”
Westminster Lodge is one of the district’s busiest and most popular leisure facilities, attracting more than a million visits each year from fitness members, swimmers, families and spa users. Its wide range of facilities, including a large gym, extensive class programme, two swimming pools, soft play, climbing and the Verulamium Spa, makes it one of St Albans’ most well-used community hubs.
