A Harpenden gym-goer celebrated his 95th birthday last week with a personal training session at his local leisure centre.
Peter Goate, who takes a taxi to Harpenden Leisure Centre for his regular workout, marked his birthday on Tuesday, July 21 with his usual session, which included a mix of cardio and strength exercises - working his legs, arms and core. Away from the leisure centre, Peter also enjoys regular walks and keeps active at home with chair-based exercises.
Peter first started attending the leisure centre almost 10 years ago after completing the NHS Cardiac Rehabilitation programme, having been diagnosed with heart disease. He has trained there weekly ever since, and for the past four years has worked with instructor and GP referral manager Delia Dorcioman.
Everyone Active’s exercise referral programme currently supports 326 people locally who have been referred by their GP for health conditions including cardiac issues, diabetes and mental health.
Delia said: "Peter is an absolute inspiration to everyone at the centre. We focus on building his strength, balance and cardiovascular fitness through exercises like the rower and leg press, which all help with everyday things like getting up from a chair, keeping steady on his feet and maintaining his stamina.
“He works hard in every session, and his progress over the years shows just how much of a difference regular exercise can make, whatever your age. He's a fantastic role model for healthy ageing and lifelong fitness."
Peter said: "The main reasons I love to come to the gym are the challenge of exercising on machines and with weights, and the friendly company of a group of people who have had similar cardio events – and of course our excellent trainer Delia. I come in the hope that I will benefit both physically and mentally from a healthier lifestyle and the company of friends. Even on my birthday? Why not. I enjoy coming."
James McNulty, area contract manager for Everyone Active in St Albans and Harpenden, said: "Peter is a brilliant example of what our exercise referral programme is designed to achieve. He was referred to us following a cardiac diagnosis, and 10 years later he is still attending regularly and still progressing on the equipment.
“That is really the whole point of the programme - it isn't about age, it's about giving people the ongoing support they need to stay active for as long as they want to. Peter has done that for a decade, and he's still going strong at 95."
Harpenden Leisure Centre is managed by Everyone Active on behalf of St Albans City and District Council.
