Hillsborough Leisure Centre officially unveiled its gym transformation on Tuesday, December 2.
Councillors and colleagues gathered during a ribbon cutting ceremony to showcase the much-anticipated upgraded gym areas following a £500,000 investment.
Completion of the works at the popular leisure centre, which is run by award-winning leisure operator Everyone Active in partnership with Sheffield City Council, mark the final major upgrade of 2025 to Everyone Active facilities across the city.
The refurbishment project at Hillsborough Leisure Centre highlights a total investment of £1.3million from Everyone Active over the course of the year in Sheffield. It follows a £750,000 refurbishment at The English Institute of Sport Sheffield (EISS) and Concord Sports Centre in August and September, in addition to a £110,000 makeover to the gym facility at Heeley Pool and Gym in June.
Residents can now enjoy a refurbished group cycle studio equipped with state-of-the-art Keiser M3i bikes as part of the improvements, alongside new cardio equipment including treadmills, cross trainers and rowing machines.
New resistance training equipment has been installed and includes the latest Olympic flat and incline benches with weight storage, dumbbells up to 60kg, shoulder and linear leg press machines and premium plate-loaded equipment.
The gym at the centre has also received fresh new décor, improvements to free weight areas and a new dedicated recovery space to provide opportunities for the local community to focus on their wellbeing.
Lorenzo Clark, Everyone Active partnership manager, said: “We’re thrilled to reveal modernised new gym facilities at Hillsborough Leisure Centre to our members and the wider community. We are incredibly passionate about providing more opportunities for people of all ages, abilities and interests to stay active, more often, and this investment is a huge part of that.
“Our partnership with Sheffield City Council over the course of 2025 has enabled us to deliver high quality, new and improved spaces that are accessible to everyone in Sheffield, and we’re excited to continue our joint commitment to support the health and wellbeing of residents in 2026 and beyond.”Councillor Kurtis Crossthorn, Chair of the Communities, Parks and Leisure Committee at Sheffield City Council, said:
“This is a fantastic moment for Hillsborough and the wider Sheffield community. The transformation of Hillsborough Leisure Centre’s gym is about much more than new equipment and fresh décor – it’s about investing in the health, wellbeing, and future of our residents.
“We’ve listened to what local people want, and this £500,000 upgrade delivers a modern, inclusive space where everyone can get active, recover, and connect. From state-of-the-art cardio and resistance equipment to dedicated areas for group exercise and wellbeing, these improvements help ensure that everyone has the opportunity to lead healthier, more active lives.
“I’m proud that Sheffield City Council, working in partnership with Everyone Active, continues to invest in facilities that tackle health inequalities and support our city’s Net Zero ambitions. This new gym will serve generations to come, helping our communities to Move More and thrive.”
