Royston Leisure Centre has unveiled the first phase of its newly refurbished gym, giving members a modern, fully upgraded space to work out.
Alongside the gym, the pool changing village has also been completely refurbished. Members will find new lockers, mirrors and vanity units, creating a fresher, more comfortable space. The reception has also been upgraded, including improvements to the food and drink offering.
The gym itself has been completely transformed and equipped with a full range of new Life Fitness machines. Members can enjoy the latest treadmills, cross trainers and bikes, alongside pin- and plate-loaded strength machines, dumbbells, Smith machines and squat racks. Theraguns have also been added to support muscle recovery.
Alongside the new equipment, the entire gym has received a full makeover, with modern flooring, lighting and décor in operator Everyone Active’s signature black, red and green colours, creating a brighter and more motivating workout environment.
The gym is already bigger than before, after knocking through into the former group exercise studio next door. Work to extend the gym even further is continuing and is due to be completed next spring. Once finished, the extension - which will follow the same design themes and equipment standards - will more than double the gym’s overall size.
The extension sits at the front right of the building as you approach from the car park. When it opens next spring, it will house not only the gym extension but also a brand-new group exercise studio. In the meantime, classes are continuing as normal in temporary locations throughout the centre, ensuring members can keep attending classes while the work is completed.
Tim Melvin, Contract Commercial Manager at Everyone Active, said: “We’re thrilled to open the first phase of the new gym. Members will notice the extra space, the brand-new equipment and the modern look straight away. There’s still more to come with the gym extension and new studio next spring, and we can’t wait for everyone to enjoy the full upgraded facilities.”
Cllr Amy Allen, Executive Member for Environment at North Herts Council, said: “It’s great to see the first phase of the new gym open at Royston Leisure Centre. The extra space, new equipment and improved changing areas will really improve the experience for members.“This work is part of our wider investment in the leisure centres, helping people stay active while also making the buildings more energy efficient for the future.”
The improvements at Royston are part of North Herts Council’s wider £16.4 million decarbonisation programme, part-funded by £7.74 million from the government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.
Across the district’s leisure centres, works include installing air source heat pumps, solar panels, and upgrading insulation, glazing and air-handling systems. Once complete, these measures are expected to cut carbon emissions by more than 60%, making the centres greener and more energy-efficient for the future.
The decarbonisation project is expected to be completed by spring 2026.
