A much-loved swimming teacher at North Herts Leisure Centre is celebrating an incredible 35 years of service this month.

Nicola Westrop, 52, from Letchworth, has spent more than three decades helping local people of all ages gain confidence in the water at the centre, which is operated by Everyone Active on behalf of North Herts Council. From babies taking their first splash to adults learning vital life skills, Nicola has supported generations of swimmers across the district.

Nicola first joined the leisure centre as a lifeguard before progressing into a full-time swimming teacher, a role she has now held for around 30 years. Today, she teaches around 26 lessons each week, including adult and baby sessions, adult and child lessons, preschool stages one and two, as well as adult-only classes.

Reflecting on how it all began, Nicola said her passion for swimming was inspired by those around her.

“Watching the swimming teachers when I was younger really inspired me and sparked my love for the water,” she said. “I still remember my very first lesson as a teacher - it was a preschool class, and although it was a long time ago, it really stuck with me.”

Over the years, Nicola has seen the centre and its swim programme evolve significantly. “When I first started, lessons were taught from the beach area,” she explained. “Now we have a dedicated teaching pool, which has made such a difference for both teachers and learners.”

One of the biggest reasons Nicola has stayed at North Herts Leisure Centre for so long is the strong sense of community. “There’s always been such a nice atmosphere here,” she said. “I love seeing children progress and gain confidence, and it’s incredibly special to now be teaching the children of people I once taught myself. Seeing those familiar faces come back through the doors is really lovely.”

“Learning to swim is such an important life skill – it can save lives and helps people feel confident and safe, whether that’s at the pool or on holiday,” she continued. “What I find most rewarding is knowing I’ve helped make children safer in the water and seeing them develop a genuine love for swimming.”

Despite her long and dedicated career, Nicola says her motivation remains as strong as ever.

“I’m most proud of the fact that I still really enjoy my job,” she added. “Watching children have fun, improve and enjoy themselves is what keeps me motivated.”

Paul Dunstan, General Manager at North Herts Leisure Centre, praised Nicola’s outstanding contribution. “Nicola’s commitment to North Herts Leisure Centre and the local community over the past 35 years is truly remarkable,” he said. “She has played a huge role in teaching generations of local families to swim and has made a lasting impact on so many lives. We’re incredibly grateful for her dedication and passion.”

Cllr Amy Allen, North Herts Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “It’s brilliant to see Nicola reach this milestone. Thirty-five years is a huge achievement, and she’s made such a difference to so many local families. We’re really thankful for everything she’s put into the centre over the years.”
