A weekly Walking Football session at Edenbridge Leisure Centre is helping people living with Parkinson’s improve mobility, boost confidence and reduce social isolation.
The sessions are led by Activity and Wellbeing Coordinator Molly Cope from Everyone Active, the operator of Edenbridge Leisure Centre in partnership with Sevenoaks District Council, and are designed to be inclusive and supportive, focusing on gentle movement, balance and coordination in a welcoming team environment.
Regular physical activity is widely recognised as helping people manage Parkinson’s by supporting movement, balance and overall wellbeing, while also improving confidence and mental health.
Molly said: “It has been a real privilege to be part of this group. I’ve seen improvements in mobility, coordination and stamina, but just as importantly in confidence and mood. The encouragement and support participants show one another has created a really positive and safe environment.”
Participants say the sessions provide both physical and social benefits.
Phil Cottingham, the founding and original member of the group, was a keen cyclist and was determined to stay physically active and socially connected following his Parkinson’s diagnosis.
Phil said: “It’s something I look forward to every week. It’s nice to turn up and meet friends, particularly Parkinson’s sufferers, as we understand each other’s difficulties. Parkinson’s is a condition which can make you feel isolated, and the group helps to bring people together to support each other.”
Hasan Romel, Area Contract Manager for Everyone Active, said the sessions highlight the importance of accessible physical activity within the community.
“Physical activity can play a key role in helping people live well with Parkinson’s,” said Hasan.
“Working in partnership with Sevenoaks District Council, we’re committed to offering inclusive opportunities and removing barriers so residents feel supported to stay active in a way that works for them.”
In addition to the Walking Football sessions, Everyone Active offers free memberships at all of its leisure centres for people living with Parkinson’s, helping to ensure cost is not a barrier to staying active.
Anyone living with Parkinson’s who would like to take part is encouraged to contact the centre for more information.
